GiKwang doesn’t want you to close your eyes in solo MV

If you’re expecting to read a non-biased review of Lee GiKwang‘s solo single album ‘I‘ and the title track ‘Don’t Close Your Eyes D.C.Y.E‘ then you’re going to be a little disappointed!

If you don’t already know – and you should by now – GiKwang just happens to be one of the reasons I love K-pop so much. He is my ultimate bias among many.

So, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s take a look at
‘Don’t Close Your Eyes D.C.Y.E‘.

The release of ‘I‘ and ‘Don’t Close Your Eyes D.C.Y.E‘ mark GiKwang‘s first solo release since the release of ‘One’ back in 2017 – and what a release it is!

The song is a smooth and sinuous blend of R&B, hip-hop and funk. Funk as a genre is something that is missing from the K-pop world in general, but if this is the groove that GiKwang is going to adopt in the future, we’re all for it.

The track borrows heavily from Michael Jackson‘s performance style both vocally and in the choreography of the clip. The song also has a liberal dose of Prince’s style thrown in.

The feel of the song is sinuous and sexy, fluid and flirtatious all at the same time floating on a bass-line that holds the song together. Is anyone else playing the last 15seconds of the song on loop? No, just me – well okay then!

Lee GiKwang ‘Don’t Close Your Eyes D.C.Y.E’

The choreography for the song maintains the Michael Jackson feel with some moves pulled directly from the Michael Jackson dance book. It also flows with an easy sinuousness exactly like the song.

This is GiKwang‘s final release before he enlists as a conscripted policeman in April.
