Xdinary Heroes are Lost and Found with new release

By  |

Lost and Found is the second release from Xdinary Heroes new album Lxve to Death. From its first moment this song grabs you by the heart strings and won’t stop pulling. It opens with a driving bittersweet riff. Then the drums hit you with a four to the floor beat that feels like a pounding heart. The song jolts you with two pulses, guitars and drums, and a pause, like an in breath, before Jooyeon’s vocals start, crisp and clear. But he’s singing about feeling vague and complacent. His beautiful, paced melody contrasts with the urgency in the music. Meanwhile the music jolts again and continues at its own thrumming and incessant pace. Something is going to happen in this story and its magnetic.

Jungsu’s voice then brings motion to the story, as the melody mirrors the words, falling over and over. The song’s energy and tension builds as Gaon, then O.de bring us to chorus hook, ‘Like a lost and found’. On the surface the song is pop rock, but beneath the almost cute image of being in a lost and found box, is an endless cycle of complacency, hope and despair, seeking connection to find alienation.

The energy of the song rises and rises until the chorus, which feels more open, like coming up for air, but then drives back in, the cycle starts again, non-stop tension, pounding drums, syncopated guitar and keys filling every musical space, creating an almost euphoric sound cresting and falling with the clean bright vocals.

The band, who write and produce their own music, are kings of storytelling. Lost and Found takes a pop rock sound and does something profound with it. At a quick listen it sounds like a simple love song with a fun sounding chorus about being stuck in a lost and found box. But it turns that into a heart-rending exploration of love and connection, with its music, lyrics and MV, while still sounding fun.

Lost and Found moves from complacency to truth seeking, alienation to demanding more than just hope, but honesty and real connection.

The last chorus and outro sound heavier but also sounds more balanced. Where the drums were up front at the beginning of the song, all the instruments become sonically balanced, equals, at the end. And the final vocals are all members in harmony. Something has been found. Musically the song ends with honesty and connection. This connection is also seen between the members in the MV.

As a rock band in the Kpop dominated music scene, Xdinary Heroes knock it out of the park with this song that will appeal to both Kpop and rock lovers. They are mature and intelligent musicians and songwriters. Their first release from the album, ICU, was heavier and more chaotic. Hearing Lost and found makes me excited for what else the album will hold.
