BTS’ Suga transforms into Agust D in intense MV for ‘Haegeum’

Last week BTS Suga released his first official solo album ‘D-Day‘ and the title track ‘Haegeum‘.

‘Haegeum‘ is a hip hop genre song that uses haegeum (traditional Korean string instrument) sounds. The song brings up the idea of ‘freedom’ to people who appear to be living freely are but are actually bound by various restrictions in daily life and society through the title which refers to both the instrument as well as the phrase ‘to lift a ban’.

I personally love it when Suga let’s his rap-beast Agust D out of the cage, and ‘Haegeum‘ seems to fulfil the criteria perfectly with its harder edge and equally edgier MV.

‘Haegeum‘ hits hard from the outset – a thumping bass that is accompanied throughout by a gayageum playing with it. It sets the track slightly off-kilter from the beginning, but it’s well worth it, and the song slams you from beginning to end. This is not an ordinary track. The haegeum comes into play through the chorus and the sound provides a slightly eerie undertone which fits the mood of the song. The contrast between the traditional haegeum and the thumping bass keeps you enthralled through the song.

The MV is the perfect match to the song and it’s themes of throwing off the limitations or restrictions that life places on us. It’s as engaging and thought provoking as the song is. Each of these elements combine to provide the perfect all round experience that ‘Haegeum’ gives.

Since its release, ‘Haegeum‘ has topped iTunes charts all over the world. It also set a new record for the highest first day sales of any solo artist in Hanteo history. ‘D-Day‘ has also debuted on number one on the Oricon daily album charts.
